The 5K Ibiza-Platja d'en Bossa to be held this coming Sunday, April 11, at 9 a.m., is expected to have the star duel between athletes Abdelaziz Merzougui and Youssef Ben Hadi. Merzougui, an athlete with a Spanish passport and member of the national team, was European junior cross country champion (2010) and has been an Olympian in the 3,000m steeplechase in London (2012) and Rio De Janeiro (2016). In addition, in 2013 he was proclaimed European under-23 champion in this specialty with a record of 8:34.64. Merzougui, middle-distance runner of the Majorcan club ADA Calvià, will try to beat this Sunday the Balearic record of 5K in route held by the athlete David Palacios with a mark of 14 minutes and 19 seconds achieved in Laredo (2019). For his part, Youssef Ben Hadi, Moroccan runner of Club Atletismo Ibiza and brand new winner of the first 10K Playa d'en Bossa that took place on March 28, with a mark of 28 minutes and 59 seconds, will be the shadow of the Olympic international with whom he will measure forces in an exciting hand to hand to take the scepter of the 5K, a race approved by the RFEA that is included in the national calendar and organized by Club Atletismo Ibiza with the collaboration of the City Council of Sant Josep. In women, the main favorite for the title is the local athlete Indre Barkute, who after overcoming the physical problems that forced her to withdraw in the 10K seems to be ready to run the fastest race among women.
